Course overview

Promotional Marketing is a remarkably broad discipline with many different types of company making their contribution to each campaign. Understanding how their company fits into the larger picture and what other companies are contributing will inevitably improve everyone’s productivity and sense of job satisfaction.

The IPM Certificate in Promotional Marketing is a key qualification for the Promotional Marketing industry, based around two five-hour seminars with supporting study notes. The seminars will be held in late March and late April and candidates make written submissions at the end of July.

The aim of the course

The course is designed for people who need to appreciate the breadth of the industry in which they work but who do not need to study to the same depth of detail that is required in the IPM Diploma in Promotional Marketing.

This course will give candidates the confidence and understanding that is necessary:

  • To appreciate their company’s role in the successful creation and management of a campaign and allow them to contribute productively to the process.
  • To converse and negotiate with clients, suppliers and other departments.
  • To see how other companies’ contributions must dovetail with their own.

Who the course is designed for

Candidates will tend to work within the Service Partner sector or in roles in Agencies or Promoters that necessitate an overall understanding of Promotional Marketing and their place in it.

  • Service Partners – account handlers, admin and support staff
  • Agencies and Promoters – creative, admin, support staff and account handlers working in related disciplines (PR, Direct Marketing, etc)

Course content

The course is made up of twelve modules (six core and six optional):

Core modules:

  • Background and overview of Promotional Marketing
  • Promotional techniques
  • The law and codes of practice
  • Digital Channels
  • Budgeting, quoting and billing
  • Account management

Optional modules:

  • The print process
  • Direct Mail & databases
  • Fulfillment
  • Premium supply
  • Door Drop Marketing
  • Field & Experiential Marketing

Course format

The course involves two five-hour seminars after which candidates will be required to provide ‘in-depth answers’ on 9 of the 12 modules covered. There will also be a multiple-choice questionnaire to complete immediately after each seminar.

All candidates must attend the two seminars, read the study notes provided and answer the multiple-choice questions based on the study notes covering all 12 modules. However, there is a choice as to which modules they answer ‘in depth questions’ on. Six of the modules are core to the course and all candidates must answer the ‘in-depth module questions’ on these. Candidates must choose three of the remaining six – so they answer nine ‘in-depth module questions’ in total.

The Seminars

The London seminars are planned for 30th March and 27th April. There may also be seminars in Birmingham and Manchester dependent on uptake and the dates for these will be confirmed once registration is complete. These are generally a week or so after the London seminars.
